  • PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK DON'T DISAPPEAR

Hanging Rock Famous or perhaps infamous in Australia as a place of intrigue and mystery. The backstory is of three schoolgirls and a teacher on an excursion to Hanging Rock and all seem to have disappeared into the rocky outcrop never to have been seen again. Despite many failed searches for the missing people. Occurring on Valentines Day, 1900. Hanging Rock is about eighty km from Melbourne in the Victorian countryside. A large rock is wedged above the walkway to the summit and this is where the name originates. Hanging Rock rises to about one hundred metres above and behind the café and the adjacent information building. Open daily. Indoor and outdoor shaded dining is available. The reserve itself is in natural bushland and many areas are grassed and cleared for the public to have BBQs or an outdoor picnic. A racecourse is part of the reserve and horses race on the track twice per year. New Year's Day and Australia Day. INTRIGUE AND MYSTERY A famous novel was penned by Joan Lindsay on the girl's disappearance and published in 1967. Peter Weir directed the 1975 film Picnic at Hanging Rock. The film tells the story of the missing girls. Their fate is unknown. Miranda, Edith, Irma, Marion and their teacher Ms McCraw. Only Edith returns to raise the alarm. Hysterical and vague. It's said by a few this event was supernatural. While filming on the set location many experienced their watch would stop working for no apparent reason. During the premiere of the film the cinema clock stopped on twelve o'clock to the second. Is the 1900 disappearance fiction or true? The truth is now somewhat lost to history. Also, two girls had gone missing at Hanging Rock about eighty years before in the early 1800s. The bushranger 'Mad Dog Morgan' (1830-1865) was thought by some to have used Hanging Rock as a hideout. In recent years a few rock and roll international artists have performed at Hanging Rock and attracted upwards of twenty thousand concert goers. Woodend is the nearest small town to Hanging Rock. The general area with its small towns, nearby forest and weekend markets are a popular tourist drawcard. • PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK CAR SHOW

SHOW & SHINE The Macedon Ranges & District Motor Club presents the annual Picnic at Hanging Rock Classic Car Show. The largest car show in Victoria and perhaps Australia. A one-day event. The 37th event was held on February 11th, 2024, at the picturesque Hanging Rock Reserve. Time: 8 am to 3.30 pm. Tickets $25 per motor car. GETTING TO THE HANGING ROCK CAR SHOW Hanging Rock is approximately eighty km from Melbourne CBD. On the outskirts of Woodend. On the day, and four km from the Reserve, bumper to bumper traffic was encountered around 9 am. Traffic built up all the way into the reserve parking area. A time of sixty minutes to drive the remaining four km. Some arriving a little later took ninety minutes. People were seated in their cars, waiting in a four-kilometre traffic line to access the Hanging Rock carpark. A man walked by, carrying a camera mounted on a steady cam, recording video. He mentioned that the footage was intended for YouTube. At least one vehicle pulled out of the queue. Unable to cope with the vehicle's rising idling temperatures. A common problem of overheating in much older cars. Reserve parking was on short, grassed paddock grounds. The elevated Hanging Rock is clearly visible from the parking area adjacent to the racecourse situated at the base of Hanging Rock. Numerous car show participants were within the track's inner fencing, moving past the Hanging Rock Café and extending much further down the reserve. Covering quite a large area. Thousands of cars on display. SHOW & SHINE PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK At the car show, the vast array of vehicles on display was truly impressive, with upwards of fifteen hundred cars spanning from vintage classics to the latest models. The inclusion of motorbikes added an extra dimension to the event, catering to a diverse audience of automotive enthusiasts. Aside from the vehicles themselves, the show offered a variety of food stalls and merchandise vendors, creating a bustling marketplace atmosphere. The presence of the iconic Mr Whippy Icecream van added a nostalgic touch, delighting attendees of all ages. For families, there was even a train available for kids' rides, although some found the enthusiastic train driver's frequent whistle-blowing a bit excessive. Tooting the very loud whistle. Nevertheless, it added to the overall charm of the event. Many visitors came prepared, bringing their own chairs to relax and soak in the outdoor picnic ambiance. The setting, with cars parked under the shade of trees on a warm day exceeding thirty degrees, created a perfect backdrop for socializing and admiring the vehicles. Engaging with the car owners provided fascinating insights into their passion and dedication. One proud owner sitting under shady trees shared the story of building his own oversized ute over a five-year period, showcasing a unique vehicle that stood out among the crowd. His parking strategy, limited to Bunning's carparks due to its size, highlighted the practical challenges of owning such a vehicle. Conversations also revolved around cutting-edge technology, with one driver enthusiastically discussing the high-performance electric Tesla on display. The silent yet powerful nature of the vehicle impressed many, challenging traditional notions of driving experience and performance. Despite differing preferences, all drivers at the show shared a common love for their cars, whether old or new, small or large. The camaraderie among enthusiasts was palpable, creating a sense of community and mutual appreciation for the diverse automotive landscape. • VISIT DOCKLANDS, MELBOURNE, BOATS, SAILING SHIPS & COW TREE

Docklands, Melbourne An early Saturday morning solo drive of several hours for a 9 am Portarlington ferry departure. Before dawn, hopping kangaroos were avoided on the empty Western Freeway in the vicinity of Beaufort. 160 km west of Melbourne. Over two hours of driving still to go to reach Portarlington. A small bayside town. To reach Portarlington meant driving through the large city of Geelong. Both are on Port Phillip Bay. Geelong to Portarlington is 30 km by road. On the Ferry Passage was onboard Port Phillip Ferries across Port Phillip Bay to Docklands, Melbourne. City skyline skyscrapers were clearly visible across the greater than forty km ferry route. A few preferred the seating in the open-air stern of the ferry. Experiencing the stiff sea breeze, sights and sounds of the bay. Eleven large freighter ships were anchored in the bay. A ferry crew member explained ships have a one nautical mile separation awaiting a dock in port. Portarlington jetty to Docklands is seventy minutes by ferry. Docklands Waterfront The waterfront of Melbourne CBD offers a picturesque setting with a bustling café located conveniently next to the ferry dock. This café not only serves delicious food and drinks but also provides comfortable seating for those waiting to board or meet the ferry. Visitors can enjoy the serene views of the water and boats while relaxing in this inviting atmosphere. Adjacent to the ferry berth and main jetty stands a unique and intriguing piece of art known as "The cow in the tree." This art installation adds a touch of creativity to the surrounding area, sparking curiosity and conversation among passersby. During the visit to the waterfront, I had the opportunity to explore the Boat Show held annually in October and learn about the Alma Doepel restoration project. I decided to support the cause by making a donation to the Alma Doepel dockside sausage sizzle and purchasing some merchandise items to contribute to the restoration efforts. Additionally, I was fortunate to receive a personal tour of the restoration site, gaining insights into the historical significance of the Alma Doepel and the meticulous work being done to preserve it for future generations. Perhaps restoration works and sea trials will be completed as planned in late 2025 or early 2026 allowing members of the public to once again sail on the Alma Doepel in 2026. For those looking to embark on a full day scenic return journey, the morning ferry departs from either Geelong or Portarlington, offering a delightful way to experience the beauty of the Melbourne waterfront and its surroundings. The ferry return trip takes place in the early evening, providing a relaxing and enjoyable way to conclude a day of exploration and discovery along the waterfront of Melbourne CBD. Fox Car Museum The Fox car museum collection, a hidden gem in Melbourne's Docklands, offers a unique glimpse into the world of rare and exotic vehicles. Housed in the historic double-storey Queen's Warehouse, which dates back to 1890 and originally served as a Customs Store, this museum is a testament to the rich history of the area. Lindsay Fox, the visionary founder of Linfox, has curated a remarkable collection of fifty or more vehicles, each with its own fascinating story waiting to be discovered. From classic cars to exotic models, visitors are treated to a journey through time and automotive innovation. As you explore the museum, you will find descriptive boards accompanying each vehicle, providing insights into their history, design, and significance. Whether you are a car enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a unique outing in Melbourne, the Fox car museum is a must-visit destination. Immerse yourself in the world of automotive excellence and marvel at the rare treasures on display, all within the historic walls of the Queen's Warehouse. Informative People Guides Informative guides are on hand. The guides are willing to explain the history of individual vehicles and why they are part of the collection. Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes and many other vehicle manufactures are on display. Upon enquiry, I was told no Lamborghini's are on public display or are in the collection. Apparently not a car of choice for Lindsay Fox. The building is located off of Collins Street river end of the CBD. Free outside visitors parking is available. One's own vehicle parking is a consideration when driving anywhere. The car parking area appears safe from accidental knocks and scratches from other vehicles. A consideration in large inner-city areas. The Collection is easy to reach by public transport. The Queen's Warehouse is a standalone building. • FORD MUSTANG GT ROAD MISHAPS

Ford Mustang GT Nine years of driving a Ford Mustang GT from new. My opinion, and for what it's worth. A motor vehicle is a collection of sheet metal, nuts, bolts and fluids. However, a mustang GT is a very fine collection of sheet metal, nuts, bolts and fluids. Just over one hundred thousand km of mileage driven in nine years. All enjoyable but not taken for granted. Also, unfortunately seven years of proving driving ability to the relevant government licensing authority via specialist medical documentation and advice. Read CIDP pages for explanations on this site if interested. Although most road users are ok. All roads have to be shared with annoying incompetent drivers and boy racers. People such as 'Elderly Ken' and similar drivers with unreported chronic conditions. Age is not the issue. Vehicle usage competency is. See photo's below with mustang mishaps of 'Elderly Ken'. Roads, the Good and Bad This Mustang GT has been driven in the baking hot dry and rainy cold weather. Both in Victoria and interstate. On ordinary roads, unsealed roads and five sessions of limited racetrack. Driving the Western Freeway which links Melbourne to regional Victoria. Sections of unrepaired potholes and other serious road issues have led to many vehicles getting damaged. After driving this freeway, it was prudent to get the rims checked. Two rear rims were found to be cracked. These were repaired as new by a specialist tyre shop costing hundreds of dollars. More funds need to be spent on major roads by all levels of government. No faults have surfaced in the vehicle. No squeaks or rattles. No leaks or electrical gremlins. No wildlife incidents. There are a few small stone chips on the paintwork. Paint finish is still good. Replacement of a battery at five years and eight years. Fitted with Pirelli P Zero tyres. Replaced with the same when required. The car retains precise steering and suspension like new. No noticeable wear on the manual clutch. Smooth gear throw action. Always draws positive attention. Even after nine years. Still very much an exciting car to drive. Great car for a day or weekend drive One of the most breathtaking drives you can embark on in Victoria is along the Great Ocean Road. This iconic route offers spectacular views of the rugged coastline, pristine beaches, and lush rainforests. While the road is popular with tourists, opting for a weekday drive can enhance your experience by avoiding the crowds and allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty that surrounds you. To make the most of your journey, consider driving along the Great Ocean Road in both directions. This way, you can appreciate the stunning landscapes from different perspectives and uncover hidden gems along the way. A perfect starting or ending point for your road trip is the charming town of Port Campbell. This quaint coastal town exudes a laid-back vibe and serves as an ideal base for exploring the nearby attractions. Experience the enchantment of Kryal Castle in Ballarat, Victoria, on a day filled with excitement and festivities. The organisers are working tirelessly to establish Oktoberfest as a recurring event, aiming to bring a touch of Bavarian culture to this charming Australian city. Ballarat, located 115 km west of Melbourne, is a picturesque destination easily accessible via the well-connected Western Freeway. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of this unique celebration, where you can indulge in traditional food, music, and entertainment, all set against the backdrop of the stunning Kryal Castle. The Oktoberfest from Twelve noon to 10pm on the inside Castle grounds. Open air venue on a Saturday afternoon. The weather was warm and partly cloudy. After sunset, there was a threat of rain or sleet and it was very cold. In the local area, not unheard of to experience hail or wind driven sleet with changeable conditions. Although lacking variety, the German beer and food was good. All enjoying live music. Later, as the evening progressed, the event underwent a remarkable transformation, evolving into a vibrant and electrifying night-time techno rave party. The sudden shift in atmosphere took me by surprise, injecting a new energy and excitement into the gathering. The pulsating beats of the music reverberated through the venue, creating a mesmerizing ambiance that captivated the attendees. The once subdued setting was now illuminated by colorful lights and pulsing with an infectious rhythm that beckoned everyone to join in the celebration. The unexpected turn of events added a sense of spontaneity and thrill to the experience, leaving a lasting impression on all those in attendance. I was not expecting this. A rave party attendee standing beside me said 'Good to see you here mate.' Thinking I don't know you, I replied what's that mean? Oh, for the rave party. I looked at the time on my phone at 8.45 pm. A comment I wouldn't expect before midnight. I am amused. Obviously looking out of place here amongst a younger demographic. I managed to stay until the 10 pm finish. Amused by the crowd antics.
